In the wake of fresh concerns about police behavior, the Justice Department on Friday announced a $20 million body-worn camera grant program.
The program includes $17 million in competitive grants for local law enforcement agencies to purchase of body-worn cameras, as well as $2 million for training and technical assistance, and $1 million for evaluation.
“Body-worn cameras hold tremendous promise for enhancing transparency, promoting accountability, and advancing public safety for law enforcement officers and the communities they serve,” Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in a statement.
The Justice Department anticipates awarding 50 grants, with the local agencies expected to match the awards.
