The Pentagon's chief defense counsel chose an Army lawyer on Tuesday to defend one of the ''Sept. 11 Six,'' a Saudi man who was held at Guantánamo for years and subjected to days of harsh military interrogation.
Lt. Col. Bryan Broyles will defend Mohammed al Qahtani, 29, whom the Bush administration has described as the 20th hijacker because he was turned away from Orlando International Airport ahead of the Sept. 11 attacks. There were 19 al Qaeda men instead of 20 on the Sept. 11, 2001, suicide mission.
