The state trooper whose use of a racial slur during a 2004 traffic stop led to the departure of two of the state’s top-ranking police officials is no longer patrolling the streets, a Highway Patrol spokesman said Thursday.
The trooper, whom the patrol has not named, is on personal leave and will be assigned to administrative duties when he returns, said Sid Gaulden, spokesman for the S.C. Department of Public Safety.
Public Safety director Jim Schweitzer and Col. Russell Roark, commander of the Highway Patrol, are out of jobs because Gov. Mark Sanford said they were too lenient on the trooper, who was captured on video using the slur as he threatened to kill a fleeing suspect.
