The longtime president of a Miami-Dade Transit employees' group was arrested Tuesday and charged with skimming more than $103,000 in dues that paid for family cruises, high-end golf clubs and his daughter's college tuition.
Prosecutors say Juan R. Rivas, a 17-year county employee and golf fanatic, used the Hispanic Transit Society of Dade County's accounts as a personal piggy bank. Rivas, 51, who declared personal bankruptcy in 1999, was the group's president from October 2000 to June 2006.
Among the items he allegedly bought with group dues: jewelry, bathroom tile, tires and automotive audio accessories, a residential alarm system — and lots of golf clubs, equipment and greens fees.
