TOPEKA — Abortion opponents are hoping to muster the votes to override the Kansas governor’s Monday veto of a bill aimed at strengthening late-term abortion laws.
The measure would have allowed relatives of a woman who had planned or is planning a late-term abortion to file suit against the provider if they believe the abortion violates the law. It also would have granted prosecutors access to abortion reports from state health regulators and would have required the state to collect more detailed diagnoses for why the late-term abortions were needed.
“I am concerned that the bill is likely unconstitutional or, even worse, endangers the lives of women,” Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a Democrat, said in her veto message. But the legislature may be able to override the veto: the measure passed 84-40 in the House and 25-13 in the Senate, where it was two votes shy of the two-thirds majority required to override a veto.
