Besides serving the needy, local charities have a new mission these days: Make the most of every mile.
The sharp rise in gasoline and diesel fuel prices is hitting them hard. To cope, managers of charities in the Piedmont are reorganizing pickup and delivery routes, asking donors for more money and looking for other ways to cover the unexpected cost.
"We are packing our vehicles. Every seat is taken at all times," said Ann Barton, administrator of York County Adult Daycare Services, which transports 210 people weekly to three day care centers. The agency has already consolidated routes and raised at least $5,000 for a gas fund.
But there is no sign of gas prices dropping.
