Gov. Mark Sanford has written to President Bush saying a deep-water reef off South Carolina is a national treasure that should be protected as a national monument.
Relatively few people know about the reef, because unlike shallow tropical reefs, it's about 1,000 feet deep in waters where almost no sunlight penetrates. It attracts many species of fish people never see, as well as species sought by commercial fishermen.
The reef is more than 60 miles off South Carolina and is part of a reef system that extends from North Carolina to Florida.
