Two injured hikers were airlifted from Camp Muir on Washington state's Mt. Rainier Wednesday, completing a rescue that started Tuesday after the hikers were trapped in blizzard conditions.
Kevin Bacher of Mount Rainier National Park confirmed that an Army Chinook helicopter took the man and woman, who have not yet been identified to Madigan Hospital for treatment. They were later transfered to Harborview Hospital in Seattle.
A third hiker died after spending Monday night stranded in blizzard conditions on the Muir Snowfield on the south side of Rainier.
The body of the dead hiker was to be removed by private helicopter if weather permits, Bacher said. If not, rangers will hike the body off the mountain.
The man who died was a 35-year-old engineer from Bellevue, Wash. His wife and a friend, both 31, were the survivors. The man had children, but his name and those of the survivors had not been released.
