OLYMPIA, Wash. — A bullet fired in an apartment building here went through three apartments, including one where a baby was sleeping and hitting no one. Now sheriff's deputies want to know who fired the shot.
A resident at The Firs Apartments, 948 Neil St. N.E., alerted dispatchers at 11:45 p.m. Monday that a bullet had come through the apartment wall, passed through an armoire and came to rest on the floor. An adult man and woman were in the apartment.
Deputies traced the bullet's trajectory through another apartment — it passed through a room where a baby was sleeping — to the upstairs unit above it.
The residents of the second apartment, a man, a woman, and the 1-year-old boy, were asleep at the time of the shooting.
The 46-year-old man in the upstairs apartment said he didn't know anything about a gunshot, sheriff's Lt. Chris Mealy said. No guns were found in the apartment, but there was a bullet hole in the kitchen floor and a spent shell casing.
Mealy said deputies want to speak to the man's roommate who was not there when they arrived.
Frank Braun, 82, who's managed the apartment for 23 years and still lives there, said he was writing when he heard a loud crack.
He thought the noise came from near the apartment complex, not in it.
"I thought it was firecracker that went off," he said.
Mealy said the person who fired the bullet could face misdemeanor or felony charges, depending on the circumstances that led to shooting.
