With one hand on the wheel and the other typing a text message, the teenage girl zips by a state trooper going more than 75 mph.
Her car is wandering into the right-hand lane on U.S. 49, a lane already occupied by an 18-wheeler. She is seconds from disaster and her focus is on sending a text message.
"At first I thought she was intoxicated," said Cpl. Johnny Poulos of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, who spotted the girl. "I thought she was going to run under the trailer. After I stopped her, she admitted she was texting."
Between chatting on cell phones, sending text messages, combing hair and fiddling with the radio, teen drivers face many distractions. Such distractions are often deadly, especially in Mississippi.
