FORT WORTH — A lawn mower exchange program Saturday brought the kind of interest one would expect for a new iPhone, and just like when the popular gadget went on sale, many customers were turned away empty-handed.
Fort Worth residents found a notice in their June water bills alerting them of the opportunity to trade in their working gas mower for a cordless electric mower for $99.
Interest in the program was immediate. City officials told residents to keep an eye out for an upcoming trade-in event but tried to warn that only 200 of the discounted mowers were available and that the offer would be open to all Tarrant County residents.
The program is designed to reduce summer air pollution by taking gasoline-powered mowers out of service. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that some older gas mowers produce the same hourly emissions as 11 cars.
