The promise of weaning America off imported oil — and the difficulty of actually doing it — were on full display here Monday.
A billionaire oilman, the country’s top agriculture official and an economist for Big Oil were in the Kansas City area to talk about a national energy policy and the need to get there as soon as possible.
But they didn't agree on how to get there.
For example, T. Boone Pickens, who spoke at the Muehlebach Tower of the Marriott Downtown, is spending millions of dollars to promote a plan that relies on wind energy and natural gas.
He told the crowd of about 600 people that the next president must halt America’s dependence on foreign oil.
"Otherwise we’re sunk,” he said, raising the specter of $200 to $300 per barrel of oil in 10 years.
