ARLINGTON, Texas _ Cabs can be yellow, checkered or any other color on the outside, but planners in north-central Texas hope to make more of them green under the hood.
They want to get as many gas-burning vehicles as possible off the road, and they’re willing to pay taxi owners $5,000 each to buy low-emissions cabs.
The North Central Texas Council of Governments, the region’s official planning agency, has enough money to replace 325 smog-belching cabs, or 12 percent of the Metroplex fleet, program manager Carrie Reese said. "They drive 60,000 to 80,000 miles a year, so the impact adds up," she said.
