School administrators in western Illinois agree that the more information students get about Internet safety, the better.
Now the state has signed onto the notion of teaching Internet safety with a new law that will require school districts to incorporate it into their regular curriculums.
"I'm glad to see that our state government is getting involved and realizing the importance of Internet safety for our kids," said Chris McMahon, Belleville District 118 technology director.
Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed the law Aug. 21 requiring schools to teach Internet safety at least once a school year to students in third grade or higher. The law will take effect Jan. 1, and requires schools to start teaching Internet safety beginning with the 2009-10 school year.
"The Internet offers a wealth of valuable information, but it can also be a dangerous place for kids," Blagojevich stated in a press release. "This new law will help teach our students the dangers that can be lurking on the Internet, and how to avoid them."
