If you don't throw away food properly, make room for one more Thanksgiving guest: the plumber.
Thanksgiving week is the busiest time of the year for plumbers. The calls start the day before Thanksgiving, as folks start cooking. They continue into Thanksgiving and the day after, as cleanup clogs the kitchen drains. And the longer friends and family stay over, the better the chance of problems with toilets and showers.
"Often, a house already has partially clogged drainpipes that aren't noticeable until holiday guests arrive and overwhelm the system," says Paul Abrams, a spokesman for Roto-Rooter Plumbing & Drain Service. If this year follows the trend of years past, Friday will bring an estimated 6,500 calls for Roto-Rooter service, about twice the amount on a normal weekday.
Local plumbers are similarly busy.
"In 30-some-odd years, I've never had the day after Thanksgiving off," says Ron Ingram, general manager for Vern's Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning in Fresno.
