OLYMPIA -- Gov. Chris Gregoire announced today a package of legislation intended to create green jobs and reduce greenhouse gas pollution to 1990 levels by 2020.
The jobs are in fields focused on energy efficiency, renewable energy, preventing and reducing pollution and cleaning up pollution.
At a news conference at South Puget Sound Community College in Olympia, Gregoire said her goal is to create 25,000 green jobs by 2020.
The Democratic governor said that the more than 47,000 existing private sector green jobs are evidence that an economic based on clean energy and environmental protection is the wave of the future.
"Washington is well-positioned to capitalize on the unique economic opportunities surrounding the growing green sector," she said. "These proposals will help protect our environment as well as create and support jobs, stimulate the regional economy and strengthen Washington's competitiveness in the global economy."
Gregoire's package was introduced Wednesday in the state Senate.
