BEAUFORT, S.C. _ Two rules proved most contentious for a committee charged with developing a dress code for the Beaufort County School District during the past six months:
Shirts must be tucked in.
No flip-flops allowed.
"Those two things kept coming up as an issue or sticking point," said Cynthia Hayes, district student services officer and member of the uniform committee, which is composed mostly of school administrators.
The Beaufort County Board of Education will consider Tuesday 29 guidelines suggested for a new dress code, which would apply to all county public school students by fall 2010. The committee developed the draft after surveying students, teachers and parents on advisory and school improvement councils.
Uniforms will be required at elementary and middle schools next school year, and in high schools for the 2010-11 school year.
As drafted,students at all schools must wear plain, collared shirts and khaki, black or navy pants, shorts or skirts. Turtlenecks also are acceptable.
Specific decisions about color and style, however, will be left to each school.
