MACON, Ga. -- There are days when Macon police officer Albert Jordan responds to 10 to 12 emergencies a day, often eating on the run during his 12-hour shift.But there are days when he doesn’t stop to eat.
“I try to run as fast as I can, as safe as I can from call to call,” said Jordan, an officer patrolling in the First Precinct mostly between lower Shurling Drive and Jones County. “It doesn’t give you any rest time or down time.
“It gets real hectic.”
Macon Police Chief Mike Burns says his department is short on officers, with as many or more vacancies in 2009 than in recent years.
Of the 305 positions allowed in the budget, the police department has 246 people on the job as compared with 264 last year and 244 in 2006, according to police records.
