A person posing as an official for the American Red Cross has been using the telephone to cancel blood drives sponsored by the agency, a real Red Cross official said.
"It's a weird phenomenon that has been going on the last couple of weeks," said Cameron Ballantyne, a Red Cross spokesman in Dallas. "We're trying to get to the bottom of it."
So far there have been four instances -- two in Wichita Falls and two in Dallas. The blood drives were scheduled at businesses, community organizations or churches, Ballantyne said.
In two of them, the group leaders agreed to cancel their events, but they later called the Red Cross office in Dallas to express confusion over the phone calls.
"They were saying, 'Wait a second, we thought we were on track,''' Ballantyne said.
In those instances, he said, the blood drives were rescheduled.
