The 2010 Census is a year away, but preliminary steps have begun for the head count of everyone living in the United States.
More than 125 census workers armed with GPS-equipped computers will be verifying addresses and locating new housing in the county. Known as listers, they finished four days of training last week and will begin their rounds today.
Clifford Hardy, 32, of Spanaway is one of them. He likes the idea of making $17 to $20 an hour in a slumping economy.
"This is really a godsend," said Hardy, who was laid off in August by a large housing development firm when the housing industry tanked.
He's been sending out resumes but hasn't found a job. The pay is more than he expected, he said, adding that he’ll take other census jobs if they become available.
