A devasting earthquake in Italy is prompting the University of Miami to expand its exchange program with the heavily-damaged University of L'Aquila, where students were killed and the campus is now a tent city for survivors.
"We know things are very hectic now, but when they calm down, what to do with students will become a concern for them," said Glenda Hayley, director of International Education and Exchange Programs at UM.
Via e-mails to L'Aquila administrators, UM has issued an invitation to host more students than usual at its Coral Gables campus for the 2009-10 academic year.
UM typically accepts five students per semester from L' Aquila.
That number could now double, Hayley said.
