BILOXI, Miss. -- Startling similarities between 1935, when the National Governors Association first met in Biloxi and now as the heads of state convene again on the Mississippi Coast, affirm the adage about history repeating itself.
Unchanged is the genuine Southern hospitality, fresh-caught seafood and coastal amenities that first drew the governors here. That’s the good part of sameness.
The economy is the challenging part. The Great Depression kept some 1935 governors away because of economic wranglings at home, and so, too, in the 2009 recession. Still, nearly half of the states (22 out of then-48 states) were represented in 1935 and 20 governors attended, the most in a decade.
