An old public-private debate has resurfaced, with coaches of cash-strapped public programs calling foul on their private counterparts, with accusations of recruiting and offering other perks.
But now, with the Florida High School Athletics Association reversing field on its decision to eliminate 20 percent of varsity games (football and cheerleading were not targeted) and 40 percent of junior varsity games statewide to save money under the threat of a lawsuit, schools in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties have revisited an idea of seceding from the FHSAA and organizing a South Florida super conference.
The reversal came amid proposed litigation citing Title IX gender-equity issues.
