RALEIGH -- As the mother of an eighth-grader at Exploris Middle School, Nancy Locklin acknowledges that the charter school's new downtown home starting Tuesday may take some getting used to.
"It shares a parking lot with a bar," Locklin said. "I think it's called something like the crazy monkey party bar."
The actual name of Exploris Middle's new neighbor is the Ugly Monkey Party Bar, a nightclub that offers patrons a shot wheel, beer pong tournaments, a cage for exhibitionist dancers and stairs leading to the top of the bar that read "ladies only."
Until Thursday, the charter school's home had been a quiet two-story building on East Hargett Street overlooking Moore Square. For years, the school, which has 192 students spread across three grade levels, operated as one of the programs offered by the Exploris children's museum located next door.
