A rockslide covered I-40 in western North Carolina early Sunday morning, and officials say the highway could be closed for months as the cleanup proceeds.
The huge rockslide was reported at about 2 a.m. at mile marker 2.6, west of Asheville near the Tennessee border. No one was injured, according to a N.C. Department of Transportation spokesman.
Initial reports indicated that the rockslide, on Charlotte's main route through the mountains, is 50 feet high and 100 feet long, officials said.
Anyone traveling between North Carolina and Tennessee on I-40 will have to take a detour until the road reopens.
The state DOT recommends: If you're going west, take I-40 West to I-240 West in Asheville to I-26 West. Follow I-26 West from Asheville to I-81 South in Tennessee and back to I-40. People going east will take the same detour in opposite directions.
