The animal-rights group PETA has sent a letter to Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson asking him to prohibit horse-drawn carriages on city streets.
PETA -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals -- made the request after a horse-drawn carriage was hit by a car late last month in Old Sacramento. The horse and passengers were injured.
The 25-year-old woman suspected of hitting the carriage was arrested the same evening on suspicion of drunken driving in Folsom. Sacramento police later arrested her for suspicion of hit and run.
"Horse-drawn carriages and city traffic are a dangerous combination," Debbie Leahy, PETA's director, said in the letter. "We hope the mayor will act to eliminate horse-drawn carriages from Sacramento's streets, not only to protect public safety but also to spare horses the misery of long days spent breathing noxious fumes and trudging on unforgiving pavement."
