The brother of the man who survived a crash that killed a Woodville, Calif., mother and two of her children Tuesday night said he does not know why the woman's 11-year-old son would have been driving the car.
Asked if he had ever seen Jose Silva drive before, Felipe Zamora Gonzalez said he had not. Gonzalez said the family was returning from Jose's soccer team practice in Tulare when the crash occurred.
The crash claimed the lives of Jose, his mother, Maria Silva, and his 6-year-old sister, Elizabeth.
Gonzalez said he and his brother, Froylon Gonzalez, shared a home about a mile east of Woodville with Maria Silva and her children. The Gonzalez brothers were friends with Maria Silva and her family, Felipe Gonzalez said.
Police said the 11-year-old driver ran a stop sign and was struck broadside by another vehicle.
The California Highway Patrol investigation is ongoing, said Officer Stefanie Buck, who works in the CHP Porterville area office. Investigators have not been able to interview Froylon Gonzalez, who is hospitalized, to learn why Jose was driving, Buck said.
"Until we're able to talk to him, we can't speculate," she said.
