When the faithful of Westboro Baptist Church wade onto the Grand Strand this weekend to spread their message that God hates America and destruction is imminent, they will be greeted with counter-protests, a determination to ignore their message no matter its volume and heightened security.
The fundamentalist group from Topeka, Kan., led by Fred Phelps and his family, has become internationally known for its damnation of homosexuality, other religions, its protests at military funerals and the ability to push its agenda to the legal limits of the law.
They plan to picket three churches in North Myrtle Beach Sunday - Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church and Barefoot Church - as well as six Horry County high schools May 21. Similar events also have been set this week for Charleston and Columbia.
