Federal ruling on California's Prop 8 gay marriage ban expected today

Susan Ferriss - The Sacramento Bee

August 04, 2010 06:37 AM

U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker will issue a decision today on the constitutional challenge to California's Proposition 8, the ban on same-sex marriage, according to a court announcement Tuesday.

Walker's written order will be released electronically between 1 and 3 p.m. It will be posted on the federal court website and will be available later for public review in federal courthouses in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose.

Walker presided over a historic trial earlier this year in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in San Francisco.

Two gay couples challenged Proposition 8, which California voters approved in November 2008, saying the ballot measure violated their federal constitutional right to equal protection.
