Tattoos have adorned the human body for more than 5,000 years - think mummies such as the Iceman and early Egyptian women, according to Smithsonian.com - and today they appear beyond biker bars, on both sexes and on all ages.
While tattoos have become a form of self-expression, celebrated on TV shows such as "L.A. Ink" and on fashion runways, the practice is not accepted by everyone and is now presenting challenges for South Carolina Horry County schools employees.
The school district's new dress guidelines say that visible tattoos and facial piercings, such as nose, eyebrow, lip, cheek and tongue piercings, are considered unacceptable attire. Teal Britton, the district's spokeswoman, said employees must cover up the particular area, and if there is something that can't be covered by clothing, options such as makeup must be considered.
