The supervisor of the Tahoe National Forest has reached a decision on a much-debated travel management plan for the forest's system of roads and motorized trails.
Tom Quinn said in a news release that he chose a plan that strikes a balance between providing motorized recreation access and protecting critical natural and cultural resources.
The plan does not include the majority of existing unauthorized routes within inventoried roadless areas and thus will reduce the amount of motorized opportunities, Quinn said.
That decision was made "in order to protect the values of solitude, old-forest ecosystems, wildlife habitat and other resources," he said.
Approximately 83 percent of the forest will be within one-half mile of an authorized road or motorized trail.
