OLYMPIA - A "Day of Jubilation" is planned Monday at the Capitol to mark the 100th anniversary of Washington women getting the right to vote in 1910.
We were the fifth state in the union to adopt women’s suffrage, a full 10 years before the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution passed,” Secretary of State Sam Reed said in an announcement of the all-day celebration that is free and open to the public.
“Our vote, which came after a long, hard-fought battle over many years, was a signal achievement and helped spur the suffrage movement across the country. California and Oregon quickly followed our vote,” Reed added of the constitutional amendment voted on by men.
