There's a problem with the new recommendations for whooping cough vaccine: the grandparents who need it aren't supposed to get it.
Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is preventable with the Tdap vaccine. Most people get the shot as young children, but must get a booster shot every 10 years. According to the Centers for Disease Control, however, less than 6 percent of adults ages 18-64 have kept up their boosters.
Now there is a pertussis epidemic in California -- 7,297 cases and 10 deaths -- as of Nov. 30. Madison County has reported four cases.
