President Barack Obama spoke at Rec Hall today, using the opportunity to announce a new initiative, including goals such as achieving a 20 percent improvement in energy efficiency of commercial buildings by 2020.
He also called for aggressive reform of existing tax and other incentives for commercial building retrofits and proposed a new, competitive grant program.
The speech followed a tour of Penn State labs where research to make buildings more energy efficient is ongoing. Penn State received a $129 million, five-year grant last year from the U.S. Department of Energy and other agencies to create the Energy Innovation Hub at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The goal is to foster research focused on finding ways to make buildings more energy efficient.
