MIAMI — The Florida High School Athletics Association on Tuesday upheld its ruling that a foreign-born student at Michael Krop Senior High didn’t have the proper paperwork to play interscholastic basketball.
As a result, star guard Bryan Delancy, 19, was deemed ineligible — and Krop forced to forfeit the 19 games in which he played.
The team, which had the best record in Class 6A basketball before the ruling, won’t make the district playoffs which begin Thursday.
Delancy’s attorney plans to challenge the ruling in court.
The state high school athletic association requires special paperwork from foreign-born players who come to the United States on a student visa. The process is meant to discourage high schools from recruiting elite athletes from around the world.
