When Michael Hunsaker coached football games on artificial turf, he could watch his players walk off the field with their socks and shoes specked with tiny black rubber crumbs.
Parents hate finding those bits all over the car or the rug at home, but Hunsaker feels good about them.
Hunsaker coached high school teams part time, but he is the full-time operations manager for the area's biggest manufacturer of that pesky crumb rubber. Those crumbs, which cushion many fake grass fields, are just one end product of an estimated 40 million used and waste tires generated every year in California, according to the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, or CalRecycle.
