When cars plowed into goats wandering on Interstate 5 Saturday, cleanup was the gruesome responsibility of workers from Caltrans' Elk Grove maintenance yard.
Come Monday, however, they were back to their usual cleanup items – shopping carts, doors, bumper assemblies, lumber, tires.
"And bed liners. We get lots of bed liners," said John Wells, landscape supervisor at the Elk Grove facility. "We're like the Merry Maids out there," he added. "We pick up every thing."
Every week the workers fill up a 40-cubic-yard trash bin, holding up to 10 tons of everything that falls on area freeways.
Wells has a dozen people on his crew; the maintenance supervisor in Elk Grove has another 10. They patrol large parts of I-5, Highway 99 and Highway 50 in Sacramento and Yolo counties.
In winter, there are Christmas trees.
"Usually it's the new trees on their way home," Wells said.
