In the wake of multiple storms during the weekend and with much more rainfall on the way, Gov. Steve Beshear declared a statewide state of emergency Monday.
Kentuckians prepared for what some say could be historic flooding. The worst trouble is predicted for areas along the Ohio River, particularly in the far western corner of the state.
One factor likely to worsen the situation is that both the Ohio and Mississippi rivers are flooding at the same time, Beshear said. The two rivers meet along the Western Kentucky-southeastern Missouri line. More moderate flooding is expected from Smithland, in Livingston County, to Louisville.
Carlisle, Fulton, Hickman, Spencer and Livingston counties, as well as the city of Bardwell, have sent the state written disaster declarations, and Ballard and McCracken counties have declared themselves disaster areas. More areas are expected to issue disaster declarations as more storms come.
