Things that go bump in a South Carolina night

Lorena Anderson - Myrtle Beach Sun-News

LITTLE RIVER -- Things got spooky not long after Kim and Eric Masson bought The Brentwood Wine Bistro in 2007.

“I’d come in in the mornings to do my work, and whenever I’d go into the restroom, I’d hear a sigh outside the door, like someone was impatiently waiting for me to come out,” Kim Masson said. “I thought it was water in the pipes, so I told my husband to make sure he turned off the air conditioning at night.”

But Eric heard it too, she said, and he insisted he always turned off the air conditioning when he closed up the Little River restaurant for the night. That was the beginning of the Massons’ ghost story – one that will be told on national television this weekend on the Biography Channel show “My Ghost Story.”

A shadowy figure

The sighing sound was just the start.

Sometimes when she was downstairs, Kim Masson said, she heard chairs and tables being dragged across the hardwood floors upstairs. When she’d go up, the rooms were unchanged; no one was there.

“I know what it sounds like when someone’s moving tables and chairs,” she said.

The brand-new dishwasher in the kitchen – which has safety bars and a lock that must be engaged before the machine can be started – would come on by itself, spewing water everywhere. To stop it, Eric Masson had to fasten the safety bar and the lock just so he could flip the power switch on and then turn it off again, she said.

Kim documented the occurrences.

She also gathered stories from customers who said they were suddenly locked into bathrooms or felt strange presences.

Kim used them to advertise the restaurant in her brochures.
