PSU trustee denies decision on Paterno, Spanier

Cliff White - Centre Daily Times

November 08, 2011 10:08 PM

A member of Penn State’s board of trustees said the board has not yet taken any action regarding the employment of Joe Paterno or university president Graham Spanier.

Calls for the ousters of both Paterno and Spanier have been raised amidst the growing media firestorm surrounding allegations of child sexual abuse against Paterno’s former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky and perjury charges filed against two other Penn State officials.

Trustee Kieth W. Eckel, of Clarks Summit, said the board had not made any formal decision, despite a report by The New York Times that Penn State trustees are planning Paterno's exit.

“I am unaware of any action referring to anyone at the university at this point in time involving the board,” Eckel said.Eckel refused to answer questions, but added, “I can assure you that the trustees will absolutely do everything to restore confidence in the university.”

Seven other trustees reached Tuesday chose not to comment or referred questions to Steve Garban, the chairman of the board of trustees. A reporter making an inquiry at Garban’s State College residence was told Garban was in meetings on campus.
