Municipal Bankruptcies

2001

Desert Hot Springs, Calif., files for bankruptcy.

The city exited Chapter 9 bankruptcy in 2004.



2008

Vallejo, Calif., files for bankruptcy.

The city exited Chapter 9 bankruptcy in September 2011.



Aug. 1, 2011

Central Falls, R.I., files for bankruptcy.

The city exited Chapter 9 bankruptcy in September 2012 without a bond default.



Sept. 8, 2011

Boise County, Idaho files for bankruptcy.

The county's bankruptcy request was denied. The county was ordered to pay a lump sum, then set a five-year tax plan to satisfy a judgement against them.

Nov. 9, 2011

Jefferson County, Ala., files for bankruptcy.

The county may be able to exit bankruptcy by December 2013 by adjusting the sewer-related debt payments.



March 10, 2012

Harrisburg, Penn., files for bankruptcy.

Harrisburg's bankruptcy request was denied. They continue to work on their finances.



June 28, 2012

Stockton, Calif., files for bankruptcy.

Stockton will vote in Nov. 2013 on a sales tax hike that will aid in their recovery.
