President Obama: Healthy, but still on the nicotine gum

By Lesley Clark - McClatchy Washington Bureau

June 12, 2014 05:11 PM

President Barack Obama is in “excellent health” according to his latest physical -- which nevertheless shows he continues to rely on the “occasional use” of nicotine gum.

The May physical – which included a number of screenings -- found that Obama is “currently healthy and that he will remain so for the duration of his presidency,” said Obama’s physician, Ronny Jackson, the director of the White House medical unit.

The third physical exam of Obama as president found the nearly 53-year-old weighing in at 180 pounds. He has an enviable body mass index of 23.7 and a resting heart rate of 62. His blood pressure was 112/70.

He had mild tenderness of the surface of the right foot, which Jackson said is consistent with recurrent right plantar fasciitis.

Jackson said Obama “continues to focus on healthy lifestyle choices. He eats a healthy diet, exercises daily, remains tobacco free, and only drinks alcohol occasionally and in moderation.”

His medications in addition to nicotine gum include ibuprofen for occasional use to treat the intermittent plantar fasciitis; malarone for travel to malaria endemic areas; and Vitamin D to treat a “mild Vitamin D deficiency.”

All Obama’s immunizations, including a flu shot were up to date, along with his travel vaccinations.
