Biden on feeling secure, challenging Clinton, ‘deflategate’

By Lesley Clark - McClatchy Washington Bureau

January 21, 2015 11:44 AM

Vice President Joe Biden made the rounds of the morning talk shows Wednesday, pressing President Obama’s State of the Union speech -- and suggesting he may challenge Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Biden, who appeared on all three network shows, also gave his take on news that the National Football League found 11 of 12 New England Patriots footballs to be underinflated in the AFC championship game.

“I tell you what, having been a receiver, I like a softer ball,” Biden said on CBS’s This Morning.

He also offered a candid assessment of his football career: “Actually I was pretty, I wasn't bad at it. Soft hands. Soft hands.”

The prospect of a (third) Biden bid for the presidency had dimmed in recent months, but Biden looked to keep his name in play, telling ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos that there’s “a chance” he’d challenge Hillary Clinton for the nomination.

“I don't think you have to make up your mind until the summer,” Biden said, adding “I think this is wide open on both sides.”

But Biden insisted his focus is “getting implemented what the president talked about last night to nail down this recovery and get the middle class back in the game.”

Biden downplayed a weekend shooting incident near his home in Delaware, saying he feels “completely safe” despite a Washington Post report that the security system has been so unreliable at times that the Secret Service turned it off for several months last year.

Biden said investigators have found that someone going by at a “fairly high rate of speed” shot four shots, probably in the air.

“There's no evidence of any bullet holes anywhere,” Biden said. “And the reports by the county police that an hour later similar shots were heard about a mile and a half down the same road. So I'm not worried about it. And I think the security in my home is fine.”
