National marketplace health insurance enrollment hits 9.5 million

By Tony Pugh - McClatchy Washington Bureau

January 27, 2015 04:14 PM

More than 9.5 million people have either selected a health plan or re-enrolled in coverage on the nation’s health insurance marketplaces as of January 16, the Obama administration reported Tuesday.

With just 18 days before the 2015 enrollment period for individual coverage ends on February 15, more than 7.1 million people have enrolled in the 37 states that use the federal marketplace portal, HealthCare.gov.

Another 2.4 million signed up in the 13 states and Washington D.C. that use their own marketplace, according to a new report by the department of Health and Human Services.

“We’re pleased that, nationwide, 9.5 million people are signed up for Marketplace coverage. The vast majority are able to lower their costs even further by getting tax credits, making a difference in the lives of so many families,” said HHS Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell. “We still have a lot of work to do before February 15, but are encouraged by the strong interest we’ve seen so far.”

Of the 7.1 million enrollees who used HealthCare.gov, 87 percent received federal subsidies or financial assistance to help pay for coverage, while 35 percent, or 2.5 million, were under age 35. Fifty-eight percent, or 4.16 million, re-enrolled in health plans and 42 percent, or 3 million, selected a plan for the first time.

Florida and California lead all states with nearly 1.3 million and 1.2 million plans selected thus far.
