So maybe this year you can't afford to take your family on an African safari or a two-week cruise through the Mediterranean. Stop pouting, dig out your sleeping bags and load up on bug spray -- and s'more supplies, too! -- it's camping season.
Inexpensive and simple, camping can offer a new kind of entertainment for kids and adults used to being cooped up all day. Paula Berube, retail manager at Hunting Island State Park, said more local families are hitting the campground just east of Beaufort and embracing the great outdoors.
"(Camping is) a way to get back to basics," said Berube, who manages the campground store. "It's not Nintendo, it's not the computer, you're not on your cell phone the whole time. It's a way to connect with family."
