Car buyers — and dealers — have found that going through the hoops for the cash-for-clunkers rebates has not been without a few hiccups.
First, expect to spend an extra hour or so at the dealership because of the additional paperwork. Second, some of the rules have tripped up prospective buyers. They include:
DOES YOUR CAR QUALIFY?
Some customers are coming with little clue whether their car qualifies under the mileage guidelines. (See box.)
Dealership staff also will help customers by showing them how their vehicles rate on the government Web site fueleconomy.gov, said Larry Kalin, general sales manager at Jim Hudson Buick Pontiac GMC Saab.
If people do their own research, make sure to check which engine you have, said Scott Rhodes, general manager of Galeana Chrysler Jeep Kia. (It's usually found on a tab next to the radiator.)
