CHESTER — Paper signs on the walls at Currence Family Restaurant modestly point out that it's better to give than to receive.
For Thomas Currence, who has run the restaurant for 15 years, that's more than just polite advice to customers.
It's his way of life, and he's willing to take the adage to the extreme to help fellow businesses scrape by in a recession that's hit Chester County hard and left the community with a more than 21 percent jobless rate.
Starting today, Currence Family Restaurant will cut back to three days a week with the hope that it will send more customers to other nearby eateries.
Currence doesn't care if you think he's crazy. He takes his direction from above.
“I do a lot of praying,” he said last week, as he sat at a table in his restaurant and flipped through a King James Bible to find Acts 20:35.
“I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
