Marius Payne came with a resume of accomplishments and a world of frustration to a career expo in Beaufort on Tuesday. His plight is not unusual in the Lowcountry, according to government officials and employment experts.
Of the 200-plus job seekers who visited with about 20 employers set up at folding tables at the Technical College of the Lowcountry, many were unemployed professionals.
The college holds at least one such expo each semester for students and the public. Tuesday's event came after the unemployment rate in Beaufort County hit 9.1 percent in June, the highest it's been since at least 1990, the first year statistics are available.
The job fair attracted both young people looking for short-term, part-time jobs and more experienced workers who said they were once in professions such as information technology, real estate or graphic design.
According to the resumes he distributed from his briefcase, Payne has a bachelor's degree in financial management from Clemson University.
