EDWARDSVILLE — Officials say the Edwardsville library is running out of space, and all options are on the table to solve the problem.
The Edwardsville Public Library is about 20,000 square feet, which head librarian Deanne Holshauser said is already below the recommended 1-1.5 square feet per community resident. Edwardsville's current population is about 25,000.
"We are absolutely to the point collection-wise where we are putting books on top of books; every shelf is full," Holshauser said. "We have run out of room at the library and our board has been working for a year and a half on what to do."
The library is 103 years old, an original Carnegie building that was renovated in the 1950s after a massive fire and again in the 1960s for what is now the records room for Madison County genealogical records. In the 1980s, a voter referendum approved doubling its size to the current building, with a children's library and meeting space on the lower level.
