A local artist has discovered a way for people to wear newspapers.
Suzanne D. Weidie of Sew What Studios in Ocean Springs creates purses, clutches and notebook covers sewn from paper.
Using old newspapers and digital images, Weidie assembles the fashion accessories with contact paper, vinyl ends, snaps and other materials. The concept came together with scissors and a sewing machine.
"I have been sewing since I was in the 7th grade," Weidie said. "I learned to sew in school and I love creating things, especially products people can use every day."
One popular image coming out of her studio recently is the Sun Herald's Super Bowl XLIV edition, featuring coverage of the Saints' 31-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts.
Weidie's enthusiasm has won her many supporters. "I started using a Rolling Stone magazine and then I thought, 'Why not newspapers?' " she said. "Everyone wants to have a Saints purse and they are sending me their Sun Herald issues and I make them into purses or clutches. It is a great conversation piece, especially for Saints fans."
Weidie started creating the purses as a way to earn extra money. “I really just wanted to be able to pay my rent. But it really is a great way to wear something that is all about what you love. Recycling is also a plus.”
